St. Hilary of Poitiers, Bishop and Doctor of the Church » January 13
Born a pagan, St. Hilary (c. 315 - c. 367) studied philosophy and the meaning of life, eventually making his way through the bible. He became a convert and was appointed bishop of Poitiers in 353. Sometimes referred to as the Hammer of the Arians, St. Hilary defended the Nicene Creed against a popular heresy, Arianism.
He was exiled to Phrygia for opposing Roman emperor Constantius II, who preferred the heresy which denies Christ's divinity. From Phyrgia St. Hilary fought with his pen, zealously writing against the heresy.

(PRACTICING) CATHOLIC-BENEATH THE SURFACE By Colleen Jurkiewicz Dorman
Mini Reflection: it makes perfect sense that everyone thought John the Baptist was the Messiah. He was the guy pouring the water.
But the Messiah was the man who came to be baptized. He was the one who descended into the waters... submerging himself in our experience of death, pain and sorrow.
The worst moment for the atheist is when he is really thankful and has nobody to thank.

Eucharistic Miracle of FIECHT
The little village of St. Georgenberg-Fiecht, in the Inn Valley, is very well known, especially for a Eucharistic miracle that took place there
in 1310. During the Mass, the priest was seized with
temptations regarding the Real Presence of Jesus in the
consecrated elements.
Right after the consecration, the wine
changed into blood and began to boil and overflow the chalice.

Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these."

Eucharistic Miracle of Cascia
In Umbria’s Valnerina Valley, near the birth city of St. Benedict of Nursia, is Cascia. While most pilgrims go there to pay homage to St. Rita (1371-1447), beneath the basilica housing her remains is preserved another Eucharistic miracle.
In 1330, a priest was preparing to visit a dying parishioner not far from Siena. He carelessly placed a consecrated host in his prayer breviary rather than in a pyx. When he arrived at the sick man's house, he heard his confession and granted him absolution. When he opened the breviary, he discovered the host bleeding, both pages stained with blood.

Miracle recognized by the church
Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano
The most well-known in the Catholic Church.
The miracle took place in the eighth century in a church administered by Basilian monks. One of the priests was doubting the Real Presence. As he pronounced the consecration, the host was transformed into flesh, the wine into blood. The Body took on the form of a heart, and the Blood coagulated into five irregularly-shaped globules.
In 1970, the miracle was subjected to scientific scrutiny. The doctors concluded that the flesh was human heart tissue and the blood is human. Both are from the same blood group, AB. Can still be seen today.

“To the prospect of the Kingdom of God is linked hope in that glory which has its beginning in the Cross of Christ. The Resurrection revealed this glory — eschatological glory. … Those who share in the sufferings of Christ are also called, through their own sufferings, to share in glory”

Rise above the Suffering
“When I shrink from suffering, Jesus reproves me and tells me that He did not refuse to suffer. Then I say ‘Jesus, Your will and not mine’. At last I am convinced that only God can make me happy, and in Him I have placed all my hope…”

What other people think
“Do not lay too much store on the favorable judgments of men, for I love thee with a perfect love. I spent My earthly existence in humiliations and scorn and in a hidden life. It was thus that I glorified My Father, laid the foundations of My Church, and remedied the evils of pride. This is the path that thou must follow.”

God Exists
“Faith in the resurrection of Jesus says that there is a future for every human being; the cry for unending life which is a part of the person is indeed answered. God exists: that is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even begins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed.”

Does God have a cell phone?
If He does, isn't it nice to think He has more time for us than we give to each other? That just perhaps He does not let it distract Him from more important things!

Eucharistic Miracle of Macerata
The Eucharistic miracle of Macerata follows the pattern in Bolsena and Lanciano. In 1356, a priest was celebrating Mass and had doubts as to the Real Presence. During the consecration, blood gushed forth from the consecrated host falling into the chalice, as well as onto the altar linen.
After the Mass, the priest promptly reported the event to the bishop who opened a canonical investigation.
Though the documents of the investigation are no longer preserved due to the Napoleonic suppressions, the linen is kept within the city’s cathedral.
Living in a busy area, we made sure our dog, a white lab named Jessie, never got loose. Well, one fateful day, Jessie had other ideas. Somehow, he got loose!! Oh, No!!!
My wife and I both jumped in our cars and frantically drove all over the neighborhood looking for him. About 30 minutes later, we got a call from our local grocery store that is about one mile from our house.
'Is Jessie your dog?' They asked. Happily, we replied. 'Yes! He sure is!'
'He's here. We found him in the dog food isle!'
Good boy, Jessie!

Jesus’ Suffering
How could I bear a crown of gold when the Lord bears a crown of thorns and bears it for me? - St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Is Jesus upset or what? In today’s Gospel (Lk 11:42-46), Jesus denounces the Pharisees and scribes for being so blindly committed to following the Jewish law. He uses “Woe to you” to the Pharisees three times in this short passage from Luke and then goes after the scribes with a woe of their own.
Why is Jesus so upset? If you take a look at the passage right before today’s Gospel, Luke 11:37-41, Jesus was invited to join a Pharisee for dinner and was rebuked by the Pharisee because Jesus had not ritually cleansed Himself before the meal. It is at that moment, that Jesus hits a boiling point. He refers to the Pharisees as “You fools” (Lk 11:40). One point that Jesus is trying to make with the Pharisees and scribes is, don’t be tyrannized by the law and don’t tyrannize others through the law. Yes, it is important to have clean hands before a meal, but it is unlikely that God will be upset with a little dirt under your nails. More to the point of today’s Gospel is that loving God, others and yourself; caring for the poor; and living a faith that promotes justice is the message of Jesus. Laws are important, but all laws should help us to live in the Spirit of Christ.
Jesus is the one to follow. However, we have in the Church so many who have gone before us and who are with us today as models to follow. Let me offer two very different examples. Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) who lived from 1515-1582. She was a Carmelite who left her convent to find a new convent. Her previous convent was lax in regard to the cloister, so she established a new convent with many rules, but all of which led members of the community to a deeper level of the contemplative life. Although it seems ironic, in this case these rules led her and others to a greater freedom in loving Jesus more.
The other example is Pope Francis. He is not claiming that we need to be perfect to be in the Church, since the Church, as he has said, is for sinners. As Jesus did, Francis does: calls us to be loving, forgiving people who are attentive to others, especially the poor. That is to follow the way of Jesus.
Today, I would ask you to consider what gets in your way of being more loving and what might you put in the way of others that may prevent them from loving God, themselves and others more fully.

Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena
In lower Umbria is the ancient town of Orvieto. Conserved in the city’s ornate cathedral is the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena. This miracle led to the feast of Corpus Christi.
In 1263, a German priest was traveling to Rome on pilgrimage, when he stopped in Bolsena. Just after the consecration, the host began to bleed. Flabbergasted, he suspended the Mass and went straight to Orvieto where Pope Urban IV was residing.
The pope investigated and confirmed its authenticity. He instituted a new feast in the liturgical calendar: the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.
